Improving Lives in a Data-Driven World

The Data Science Institute (DSI) is playing a lead role in leveraging data for good, from predictive models for climate change and sea level rise to medical breakthroughs.

Partnering with over 40 academic departments across the University, the DSI is Brown’s centralized hub for the use of data in research, education, training, and community outreach for scholars in virtually every field. Brown is committed to establishing data science as a cornerstone of a 21st-century liberal arts education.

The DSI is home to two interdisciplinary research centers: the Center for Computational Molecular Biology, which promotes research and learning at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, and molecular, cellular and evolutionary biology; and the Center for Technological Responsibility, Reimagination, and Redesign, which seeks to redefine computer science education, research, and technology in ways that put people first.

“ The Data Science Institute transcends traditional boundaries of research to make real progress in breakthroughs in our understanding of the natural world, advancements in public health, and opportunities to improve and advance society. ”

Brenda Rubenstein ’07 Director of the Data Science Institute, Krieble Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Physics

Through philanthropic support from the community, the DSI will continue to:

  • Develop every student’s data fluency to better interpret, create, and communicate information in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, life sciences, medicine, and public health

  • Expand the master’s program in data science and build communities of researchers with intellectually diverse perspectives to spur innovation and accelerate problem-solving discoveries

  • Collaborate with and convene stakeholders at Brown and beyond—researchers, policymakers, advocacy organizations—on projects across a range of human-data-AI applications

Support data science at Brown.

Help drive discovery that will realize the promise of big data to improve lives and enhance the human experience.
