Cultivating Artistic Innovation

The arts at Brown are a wellspring of inspiration, investigation of big ideas, and critical inquiry into the questions facing humanity around the world. The Brown Arts Institute (BAI) creates opportunities for faculty, students, and visiting artists to fuse theory, practice, and research through year-round programming, interdisciplinary courses, artistic and academic partnerships, and newly commissioned works. The ultimate goal is to establish Brown as the destination of choice for artists who want to examine complex problems and push the boundaries of their fields.

“ At Brown, students from all concentrations not only benefit from a rigorous academic experience but also a creative, artistic one. The BAI is supporting faculty and student pursuits in the arts that cannot happen easily in one department, including opportunities
to partner with exceptional artists who are broadening the way we think about the world. ”

Avery Willis Hoffman Brown Arts Institute Artistic Director

This is a time of tremendous growth for the arts at Brown, with the opening of The Lindemann Performing Arts Center and the expansion of the Brown Arts Institute. The BAI is positioned well to develop new perspectives on challenging topics and prepare students to thrive in a range of creative careers.

Critical investments will broaden the institute’s capacity to advance artistic experimentation, meaningful research, and community partnerships, building on the University’s exceptional legacy of creativity:

  • Professorships for recruiting and retaining artistic scholars and practitioners
  • Innovation funds to bring practicing artists in various fields to campus
  • SPRINT/BrownConnect funds to support students embarking on internships and research opportunities in the arts
  • Public art and exhibition funding to preserve and expand Brown’s permanent collections at the David Winton Bell Gallery and its artistic installations across campus
