“I conducted translational research at the Center for Spine Tumor and Chordoma Research. We have been probing patient tumor samples for molecular markers with the hope of developing novel therapies. Being a part of this research has given me the context and background as to why some interventions are indicated for our patients, as well as enabling me to apply my medical education to create the therapies we are working on in the lab.”
“I absolutely loved doctoring, from the community mentor sites to the service learning requirements to hearing the perspectives of some of my classmates during discussions. My medical and social and behavioral science faculty during the first year were amazing. They really encouraged discussion, and I felt that their experiences gave me really good insight.”

Advancing Diversity in Medicine Term Scholarship
Our mission is to improve the health and wellness of all. To do that, we need to attract and train students from all cultural, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. For many students—especially those from historically underrepresented groups—the cost of a medical education can be a huge barrier.
With the Advancing Diversity in Medicine Term Scholarship, we’re aiming to remove that barrier. This scholarship provides current-use, financial resources for students underrepresented in medicine. Establishing this annual term scholarship provides an opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to avail themselves of all that a Brown medical education has to offer.

Over 55% of Brown Medical Annual Fund dollars support financial aid, making it possible for the Medical School to recruit and retain the best and brightest students.
“As a first-generation college student, pursuing a degree in medicine initially seemed unattainable. Support from the Brown Medical Annual Fund helped lower the financial barriers for me to obtain an incredible education and focus on pursuits like helping to create new curriculum about incarceration and health, leading classes on perinatal health care, and volunteering at the Rhode Island Free Clinic.”
