Advancing Diversity in Medicine Term Scholarship
Our mission is to improve the health and wellness of all. To do that, we need to attract and train students from all backgrounds. For many students the cost of a medical education can be a huge barrier.
With the Advancing Diversity in Medicine Term Scholarship, we’re aiming to remove that barrier. Establishing this annual term scholarship provides an opportunity for students from the full range of diverse backgrounds to avail themselves of all that a Brown medical education has to offer.
As a result of my rich undergraduate research experiences, I decided to apply for Brown’s MD/PhD program, specifically in computational biology. The MD/PhD program is nationally recognized for its education in the liberal arts, which is supplemented by The Warren Alpert Medical School’s commitment to preparing medical students for careers dedicated to equitable patient care and health equity. As a result, I continued conducting research in health equity throughout medical school while leveraging my computational skills through the Scholarly Concentration Program, an elective program allowing medical students to pursue rigorous study of a cross-disciplinary field.
The Student Experience
For Emma Danes MD’28, the Brown Medical Annual Fund has already made a lasting difference.
During her first year, Emma received her white coat at the Ceremony of Commitment to Medicine, worked alongside a physician-mentor at a community-based practice through the Doctoring course, and is now conducting summer research on melanoma risk factors.
Each of these experiences has helped me grow as a student, a future physician, and a member of the Brown medical community. I carry these moments with me as I continue to learn what it means to care deeply, think critically, and serve others through medicine.
