Medical Reunion Weekend 2026 connects physicians across generations

The Warren Alpert Medical School celebrated alumni from 1976 to 2021 and welcomed the MD Class of 2026 to the Brown Medical Alumni Association during a weekend of reflection, recognition, and community.

Over 200 alumni, medical and Gateways students, and families gathered in the Medical School on Friday evening to reconnect with classmates, share memories, and forge new connections within our community.

Medical School dean Mukesh K. Jain began the program with a toast to the MD Class of 1976, who are celebrating their 50th Reunion. “This school is built on the shoulders of those who came before us,” said Jain. “We are so fortunate to have some of our pioneers here with us this evening.”

Dean Jain went on to recognize soon-to-be graduates and their families on reaching this milestone. He also shared a special welcome to alumni and students of the Brown-Tougaloo Early Identification Program, which is commemorating 50 Years of Excellence in Medicine this year.

This school is built on the shoulders of those who came before us. We are so fortunate to have some of our pioneers here with us this evening.

An inspiring lecture on leadership and gratitude

Amit Joshi ’97 MD’01 received the honor of delivering the annual Ruth B. Sauber Distinguished Medical Alumni Lecture.

Dr. Joshi is celebrating his 25th medical reunion and was nominated by several of his peers, including Jason Slosberg MD'01, who described him as someone with “an unwavering passion for life, purpose, and people.” Dr. Slosberg reflected on Dr. Joshi’s compassion and infectious spirit, recalling how he slept on the floor of a 50-patient tent in Bhuj, India to remain close to patients in case of emergency, and how he “lights up any room he steps into with his infectious smile and encourages us all to be the best version of ourselves.”

Dr. Joshi is the associate dean for graduate medical education and professor of surgery at Cooper Healthcare and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden, New Jersey. His lecture examined the evolution of competency-based medical education over the last 25 years, from progress to impact, and the future of training. During his presentation, Dr. Joshi also reflected on his pivotal experience in Brown’s Program in Liberal Medical Education and the deep gratitude he feels for the many mentors at Brown who helped him become the physician he is today.

The Sauber family was also in attendance. They are celebrating a very special milestone of their own this weekend—the graduation of Ruth’s granddaughter, Elyse Sauber ’20 MD’26.

Coming together as one Brown community

The weekend culminated with a class dinner for all medical reunion classes and their families, as well as the Brown Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors. It was an evening full of camaraderie with friends old and new.

Then, on Sunday morning, alumni made their way to the top of College Hill to join the annual Commencement Procession, walking through the Van Wickle Gates to the First Unitarian Church alongside the MD Class of 2026. Chief Medical Marshal Andrew G. Young '95 MD'01 proudly carried the caduceus staff in honor of his 25th reunion.

In a year that underscored the strength and closeness of the Brown community, Medical Reunion Weekend was no exception. Alumni, medical students, family, and friends came together in celebration, demonstrating that Brown is, and always will be, ever true.
