Brown Alumni Magazine welcomes new leader, begins next chapter

Ed Weinman, an innovative storyteller and editorial leader, has stepped into the role of editor and publisher of the Brown Alumni Magazine.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Edward Weinman has joined the Brown Alumni Magazine (BAM) to lead the publication as its next editor and publisher.

Weinman comes to the BAM with a distinguished 25-year career spanning roles in journalism and alumni magazines, including 15 years at four different higher education institutions. In his most recent positions, he led publications at the Rhode Island School of Design and Connecticut College.

In print since 1900, the BAM is Brown’s flagship magazine and today reaches more than 100,000 readers. The magazine has earned awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) as well as a national Eddie Award from Folio, which hosts the most prestigious recognition program in the publishing community.

“When I look at the events and people shaping our world, the Brown community is everywhere,” said Weinman. “I’m here to tell stories about Brown’s vast reach, and profile the human experience as seen by our alumni, faculty, and students. The BAM is more than an alumni magazine; it’s a living bridge that connects alumni—and future alumni—back to campus.”

Cass Cliatt, Brown’s senior vice president for communications, led the search committee tasked with finding a new BAM editor. The committee was composed of alumni, University leaders in communications, and prominent commercial magazine editors who serve on the BAM’s Board of Editors. In a competitive applicant pool, Weinman stood out as a top choice for his well-rounded experience spanning editorial leadership as well as business and financial operations, according to Cliatt.

“Ed brings to Brown a tremendous depth of experience in magazines and a real sense of clarity about the importance of the BAM in helping our alumni maintain authentic connections to their alma mater,” said Cliatt. “I am excited to see how his editorial talent and magazine publishing expertise will shape the next chapter of the Brown Alumni Magazine, continuing its legacy of thought-provoking and compelling storytelling.”

After many years as a successful journalist, including at international travel magazines and as a freelance correspondent for the Associated Press, Weinman first transitioned into higher education publishing as a writer at Whitman College’s magazine in 2011, where he was quickly appointed editor. He moved next to Connecticut College as director of content and editor of the college’s magazine. He led a redesign of the magazine, created a digital version of the publication, and increased engagement across all social media channels.

In 2022, Rhode Island School of Design hired Weinman to launch the alumni magazine from scratch—a publication that has been described as a true work of art, in both content and design, befitting one of the nation’s premiere design institutions. The magazines Weinman has published have won numerous CASE awards for writing, editing, and design over the course of his career.

In addition to his positions in journalism and publishing, Weinman has a screenwriting credit among his professional accolades. He co-wrote the screenplay for the feature film “A Little Trip To Heaven,” which stars Forest Whitaker, Jeremy Renner, and Julia Stiles. He’s also the author of two novels, “Snowblind” and “The Ring Road.”

Weinman earned an MFA in writing, literature, and publishing at Emerson College and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Oregon State University.

The first BAM issue under his leadership will reach Brown alumni in March 2026.
