Amid the gardens of the Maddock Alumni Center grounds is an elegant brick walkway centerpiece. When you add your name—or the name of any alum you wish to honor—you are making a nonrefundable, $250 tax-deductible gift to Brown University. Your gift will directly support programs and services that enrich the lives of Brown alumni.

Engraving Your Brick

  • Only one person’s name per brick.
  • Maximum of 16 characters per line. (Long names may appear on two lines.)
  • The final line contains class year(s).
  • No nicknames, titles, messages, or monikers are allowed.
  • An example of brick engraving formatting:
    • Josiah S. Carberry
    • Class of 1764

Ordering & Installation

  • Orders are accepted throughout the year on a rolling basis. 
  • Bricks are installed in batches at least once a year, typically in the spring. 
  • Confirmation messages are sent via email once installation locations have been mapped in the walkway.
  • Requests to place bricks together will be honored when possible where available space and existing brick placements allow.
  • Individual brick selections, color preferences, and custom font requests cannot be accommodated. Bricks may vary in shape and color.
  • Bricks can only be installed in the garden of the Maddock Alumni Center at 38 Brown Street. Installation at other locations on campus is currently not available.
  • Because all bricks are installed outdoors and exposed to the elements year-round, they naturally show signs of weathering over time.
