Brown’s total budget for financial aid

Financial aid was one of the most important factors in my decision to come to Brown. Coming from a single-parent immigrant household with two children in college, my family had to be serious-minded about securing as much financial aid as possible. Thankfully, Brown has been very generous with financial support. I’m grateful for the opportunity to fully pursue my intellectual interests, both inside and out of my declared concentrations, with the Open Curriculum.

Brown has taken bold steps toward achieving a net-zero campus and decarbonizing our infrastructure. Guided by our Sustainability Strategic Plan, environmental stewardship and climate resiliency remain central to Brown's progress. Our new Brook Street residence halls received an Excellence in Sustainability honor, while the Dry Bridge Solar project now generates two-thirds of campus electricity needs. These strategic initiatives are creating a more adaptable and resilient Brown for generations to come.

I have worked in the Office of Sustainability & Resiliency for the last two years. I have learned about energy engineering as a career, how real energy systems function, and how to monitor energy consumption across the entire university. This internship has shown me what promoting sustainability means, practically. I have learned what advancing energy efficiency and sustainability goals looks like with real infrastructure. I have also gained crucial data analysis and science communication skills throughout this internship.

As part of my study abroad experience with the Institute for Field Education, I interned with the LiLPa (Linguistics, Languages, Speech) research unit at the Université de Strasbourg. By the end of the semester, I still had many open research questions that I wanted to explore, but didn’t have the necessary funds to stay in the country. Thanks to an award from Brown’s SPRINT LINK Opportunity Program, I was able to perform in-depth research throughout the summer, all while also fostering deeper relationships with my advisor and other PhD students, hiking in the Vosges mountains just outside town on my free weekends, and exploring the city of Strasbourg on my own, outside of the bubble of my study abroad cohort.

Affinity Scholarships

Brown offers all admitted undergraduate students full financial aid to meet demonstrated financial need, based solely on the amount of that need. A financial aid offer may consist of any combination of state grant, federal grant, and work-study/campus employment. The remaining demonstrated need is met with a Brown University Scholarship that does not have to be repaid. Funding for a Brown University Scholarship may come from various sources, including our affinity scholarships. Some of these funding sources have a donor preference, while others do not.

Being part of the IPC Scholars since my freshman year has opened doors for me in many ways. They connected me to the Biomedical Science Career Program, which helped me land my first college internship and find medical mentors. They have also been like a family, continuously supporting me and believing in my capabilities. This community and so many others on campus have played a significant role in my journey at Brown, and they mean a great deal to me. The support I have received inspires me to thrive and give back.

I’ve found that creating a community has been the most pivotal part of my college experience at Brown. Everyone has their own unique story, and I really enjoy learning about the people I’ve met. The diverse backgrounds and perspectives enrich my understanding of the world. Whether it’s through late-night study sessions, spontaneous get-togethers, or deep conversations in the dining hall, I feel that these connections have shaped my time here in the most meaningful way. Engaging with such a vibrant community not only enhances my learning, but also reminds me of the importance of friendship and support during this transformative journey.

When alumni had the opportunity to interview candidates for Brown, I had the privilege of serving Brown as the area chair for Korea for over a decade and the regional chair for Asia Pacific for three years. And every year I received questions about Brown’s financial aid policy for international students. As Brown continues to be a leading university, not only nationally but also at the international level, the recruitment of the best students from around the globe is essential and the International Brown Annual Fund Scholarship plays a pivotal role!

The Primary Care-Population Medicine (PC-PM) Program has been a highlight of my medical school experience. It has allowed me to immerse myself in the multifaceted ways that our healthcare system functions, and it encourages students to engage with communities, give voice to marginalized populations, and extend their impact through research, advocacy, and leadership. The program has given me hope that we, the next generation of physicians, can treat the patient who is sitting right in front of us, while also thinking critically about the social determinants of their health, the family and community that surrounds them, and the strengths that they bring to their own health journey.

Supporting public health now means investing in solutions that are evidence-based and equity-centered. It's how we protect the health of entire communities and ensure that our systems serve everyone, not just the most privileged. My work focuses on enhancing access to services, centering the voices of people who use drugs, and generating data that inform more humane, effective policies. Supporting this research means standing up for life-saving harm reduction, expanding access to treatment, and challenging systems that perpetuate inequities. It’s not just about studying addiction. It’s about building a more just society that meets the needs of our most vulnerable.

I have long called Rhode Island home; however, it is my experience in the Health Equity Scholar (HES) program that has opened my eyes to the special, community-oriented place that it is. HES connections have brought us closer to both the community and to each other. I have been able to explore my interests in immigrant health and health disparities in Rhode Island Latinx communities through gaining hands-on exposure working with Clínica Esperanza, an experience made possible because of Brown and the HES program.

Thanks to the generous funding, I have been able to utilize the Brown Design Workshop to learn skills for both in and outside of the classroom. Now I can use the sewing machines, lathes, woodworking tools, and so much more to engineer actual products in my classes. This gives me real, hands-on experience in engineering and design. I am grateful to have resources to learn from that are more than just the books.

Being a student-athlete at Brown means living in two worlds. One moment I’m running drills under pressure; the next, I’m solving problems or preparing for classes. The balance isn’t easy, but it’s exactly what makes the experience meaningful. What’s made it all even better is the community. Support is everywhere, all you have to do is ask. Professors are supportive when they see you’re putting in the effort. Coaches care just as much about your mindset as your stats. Trainers, academic advisors, even teammates from other sports—all of them want you to succeed. On the Student-Athlete Impact Tour to Spain and Portugal, I spent 10 days with athletes from 17 teams, and it reminded me how strong this community really is. Brown pushes me to show up fully as a leader, a learner, and a teammate. Being a student-athlete here means embracing every challenge and never doing it alone.
